About Us

Steve Butzel

Steve is a leadership coach who enjoys working with library directors, nonprofit executive directors and business leaders. He is an innovative thinker, a bold leader, and an intuitive and empathic guide. He holds a B.A. from Yale University and an M.L.I.S. from Simmons College which aided him in curating a 20 year career in public libraries, including 12 years in organizational leadership positions.
He deeply values honesty, integrity, joy, vitality, curiosity, vulnerability, transparency and courage both in himself and others, and he treasures the loving relationships he has co-created in his life.
Steve enjoys attending regular yoga classes, swimming, connecting with a wide range of people in his community, and performing standup comedy. He is a huge music lover with Phish being his all-time favorite band. Some of his favorite reads these days include "Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less" by Greg McKeown and "Courage is Calling" by Ryan Holiday.

My Coaching Philosophy

My coaching philosophy is founded on the belief that coaching is a thought-provoking, action-oriented process in which the client and coach work together in a powerful alliance.
This alliance, or partnership, is based on the understanding that the client is the ultimate expert on themselves, and my job as their coach is to serve as a facilitator, guide, supporter, cheerleader and challenger to help them determine, refine and ultimately achieve their goals, as well as become their most vibrant and authentic self. We are seeking lasting change over short term success!
In addition to offering curated coaching conversations, I provide my clients with resources, assessments and exercises designed to foster self-reflection and encourage exploration and expansion of their leadership potential. I also offer my clients new ideas and perspectives, and challenge their preconceived ways of thinking about themselves and their roles as leaders.

My Passion, My Purpose

At Uncomfortable Fun, I am passionate about collaborating with clients who no longer wish to settle for the status quo at work and/or in other areas of their life. They desire to co-create a unique path to a more vibrant, courageous and empowered life as a leader. They are deeply committed to their personal and professional growth, and are ready to take actions that will bring about meaningful change. While I appreciate this may well mean getting uncomfortable at times, I also know it will be a fun and deeply fulfilling journey, one which I will honor throughout.

I collaborate with clients of all ages and from all life circumstances. The one common characteristic of my clients is that they desire to feel more confident, more courageous and more joyful, and they are eager to break through what’s holding them back. If that sounds at all like you, schedule a no obligation complementary coaching conversation with me, and let’s see if we’re a good match to work together!

Client Testimonial

"Working with Steve during the Library Leadership Weekend Retreat was an incredible experience, and far more impactful and powerful than I could have anticipated. Having known Steve for many years, I had great faith in his skills as a facilitator, but he far exceeded any expectations I had. His professionalism, kindness, insight, and genuine caring for all the participants was clear in every interaction we had with him. I highly recommend working with Steve, whether as a coach or a retreat leader. The retreat was just the beginning of my journey, and I am so thankful I took this first step with Uncomfortable Fun."

Client Testimonial

"I can't speak highly enough of Steve's organization of our Library Leadership Weekend Retreat. It was evident from even before the weekend started that Steve was deeply committed to our personal and professional growth. Steve's leadership of all activities throughout the retreat was outstanding, but of particular note was his facilitation of our group discussions. He so deftly managed discussion (and at times, emotional and intense conversation,) one would think he was born doing this. If you have the opportunity, I would highly, highly recommend you attend a Library Leadership Retreat with Steve. You will return feeling rejuvenated, reinvigorated and READY to lead!"
